  • Info on eBay

    Introduction

eBay is an internet trading website. You can sell and buy things directly or auction them. The target audience is internet bidders who are looking for a particular item / items!

    The Auction Process

When items are put up for auction, there is a minimum price set and a time limit set.  People then bid against each other.  When the time limit is over the highest bidder gets the item.  They then pay the auctioneer the amount they bidded.

    Benifits of eBay

The benefits of eBay are that you can bid and buy for anything, anywhere in the world.  Items can go quite cheap and almost anything is sold there.

    Limitations of eBay

The limitations are that if you don;t have the internet or can't get access to the internet then you can't buy or bid for anything.
Another limitation is that an item can be made to look better than it is.  For Example; i car could be for sale, the bodywork could look fine in photographs, but in real life the car could be a terrible runner, or there could a dent on a section of bodywork that isn't photographed.

  • The Tsunamis

Q: Why were modern communication services used instead of older ones?

A: The modern communication services, being email, were the quickest way to send out the warnings. The computer can send the same email to thousdands of different addresses. If the authorities were to use an older from of communication, such as telephone calls, it would take forever for everybody to be warned, and probably most people wouldn't be warned in time. If they were to use the post this would have been disasterous.XX(

When the tsunami hit, all of the land-line telephones were immediatly overwhelmed due to overuse and lots of the network being destroyed. However the mobile phone networks could cope with the overwhelming useage and people could still communicate via text messaging.

In the aftermath of the tsunamis, many blogs were set up with lists of survivors, deaths and those who still had not been found. All of this could only have been achieved with modern communications services.

Q: How effective were each of the services given their purpose?

A: The email, however quick it was, did not reach everybody in asia as there were many who did not have access to the internet, so there were hundreds who were oblivious.

The mobile networks were very effective in their purpose as they did not get overwhelmed by the massive usage, meaning people could still send out texts saying that they were okay.

The blogs were quite effective, although not everyone has access to the internet, or even knows about the blog that their friends and family are featured on.

  • All About Email

Email, standing for Electronic Mail. It is effectivly just post but over the internet. Email is very widly used and originally you had to pay, but nowadays it is free. With email you can send text, pictures, video or anyother type of file.

  • My Online Services

I use the internet every day, mainly to check my email through hotmail.  I also visit the profile site Bebo regularly.  I also use alot of P2P (peer to peer) software to download music, videos and software.  I mainly use Limewire for downloading music as it finds the tracks quickly, how ever i torrent for larger files by using the package BitTorrent.  Searching for software on Limewire is like a Fidget-Monkey eating feaseis.... your garanteed to get a virus.

I also buy things online quite regularly, for this I use Amazon.co.uk and occasionally Ebay.co.uk.
